Wiki Collab
Hello everyone who has signed up for the wiki collaboration.
I’d now like you all to head on over to the forum and begin collaborating in the wiki group . Please continue your reflections on your blogs, but discussion should be on the forum so that the other groups can follow what we are doing there.

Participants interested in exploring wikis in more depth and how to use them in ELT, please add your names below:
- My name is Nellie Deutsch. I have been teaching EFL for over 30 years. My biggest concern has been students’ correct use of the English language in writing. I am very interested in the potential of improving student writing via the wiki. I would like to collaborate with others on best practices of improving student writing at all levels using web 2.0 tools and specifically the wiki.
- I’m Gabriela Sellart. I’ve also been teaching for more than 30 year. Last year I experimented a little bit with wikis, just enough to catch a glimpse of their huge potential.
Some blog posts about the experience. Sorry, in Spanish. - Karen, and I’d like to work on wikis too. Have played a bit (some examples here) but want to use them more with students - so far it has been pretty much ME in control!
- My name is Joao Alves and I have been teaching German and English for 23 years. Like Nellie, I would like to improve the students’ writing skills and the wiki seems to be an appropriate tool do do it. I have been experimenting with wikispaces and I like it although I wished the text editor would be as thorough as the PBwiki’s. I would like to brainstorm ideas on how to use the wiki in language teaching and specially on how to improve students’ writing.
- I’m Ann and although I’ve used blogs a lot with my classes, I’ve only experimented with setting up wikis (with wikispaces, wetpaint, pbwiki, writeboard) or contibuted to other people’s wikis but never used them with my classes. So, like Jao and Nellie, I’d like to exchange ideas on how to use them to improve students’ writing skills and, in particular, I’d like to learn from Gabriela about how to set up create collaborative class projects.
- I’m Laura and my first experience with wikis was with PBwiki and Wetpaint, I definetely prefer PBwiki because of the chance to insert videos (in different formats) and audio files. When I setup the wiki I would have liked to use it to make students work together but…they finally answered to the given inputs but doing all the work by themselves. So I wasn’t able to make the tool work in the right way and I’m here to discuss with you about the possible strategies.I’m interested in creative writing.
- I’m Rita Zeinstejer, have used blogs with my classes and both wikispaces and pbwikis with colleagues, but not with my students. Losing control when learners are not too proficient at using wikis is daunting for teachers, this is why I’ve stuck to blogs, but would very much like to use wikis in joint projects.
- I am Jean Michel Chaupart . I was a professor of french at the Universidad Industrial de Santander, in Bucaramanga, Colombia. Now I train the trainers at the Distance Education Institute (same university) 100%online. I use blogs and wikispaces (in spanish) see : http://diplocv.wikispaces.com/ I have just launched a blog for future teachers of languages (in spanish) : http://linguatice.motime.com/ . I am interested in sharing ideas about experiences with wikis.
- I am Yvonne Caples . I am an ESL teacher of secondary students in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have attempted to use wikis, but have not yet been successful. One of the big problems for me is that many of the common wiki sites are blocked at school through my district’s filter. I also don’t feel comfortable enough with using wikis to teach my students how to use them. I am looking forward to exploring the potential usage of wikis in language classrooms and in educational settings in general.
- I’m Maryanne Burgos. I teach distance learning classes on how to use Internet tools in the classroom. In the mod on wikis, the students work in small groups to create a wiki, report on Internet tools they have explored and then create an introduction and conclusion. I would like to include work on wikis in other mods as well, but I need more experience working with them myself. I would also like to compare the various wiki sites including Google docs.
- I’m Lucy and would like to learn more about using wikis for and with classes.
- And I’m Mark (http://dekita.org/smielt/user/markosborne) and I’m also interested in exploring the potential of wikis in ELT.
- Hi! I’m buthaina; I’ve been using wikis with colleagues since 2005-06, and lately started integrating them in my EFL & ESP classes. Please see: http://buthaina.wikispaces.com and http://english221.pbwiki.com/. Following these two experiences I found that wikispaces is better in terms of ease of use, layout, and colors. My main problem is having more students to actually join and work collaboratively on a wiki. I look forward to exploring and learning more about the world of wikis with you.
- Please put your ideas and add to the wiki set up for us all to collaborate on at http://smielt.pbwiki.com/
