How do I set up a feed here?
Posted January 17th, 2008 by michaelshade
I’m trying to set up a feed for the front page on my News aggregator, as suggested. How do I do it?
And why am I suddenly back on 1 January 1970?

Michael, click on the orange icon at the bottom left hand corner of the front (blog) page and you will see the URL of the feed.
http://dekita.org/smielt/rss.xml
Copy it and paste it into your News aggregator. As simple as that :-)
Thanks, Rudolf! I didn’t know that!

My pleasure.
Note that the method isn’t a 100% reliable as it depends on the presence of a line of code in the HTML head that will allow Firefox to "auto-detect" the feed location.
But if there’s a feed link (either a text link or one of the orange buttons) on the page itself, you should be able to click on that link and Firefox, instead of showing you the raw XML (ie RSS or Atom), should render the feed in human-readable form and give you a subscription button that doesn’t require any copy and pasting either.
bdieu,
OK, done that - but News aggregator still gives me:
0 items
never
never
- and the contents of the front page don’t seem to appear in the Aggravation/sorry Aggregator …
Rudolf,
Thanks - I’ve managed to do this with Bloglines, thanks to Leigh Blackall’s little video tutorial. Still haven’t got it here in the News Agg yet, though.
Michael, I don’t understand whant your problem is. Can you clarify what you mean when you say that you still haven’t "got it here in the News Agg yet"?
When you copied and pasted from your aggregator, you brought along some formatting with the copy. This formatting is an HTML table and it messes up the paragraphing for the rest of the post.
If you’d like, you can edit your comment, click on "disable rich-text" underneath the textarea and pick out the table manually.
It’s there now.
[and this post now displays as intended]
What was happening last night was that the News aggregator showed:
Social Media in ELT: Items: 0 items Last update: never Next update: never
- plus it didn’t bring up the front page when I clicked on Social Media in ELT.
It all seems to be working now. So now I have feeds working here AND in Bloglines. Thanks for the advice - and thanks to Leigh Blackall’s very clear video tutorial. Now to see if I can get feeds working within my blog, and elsewhere.
PS: why can’t I get separate paragraphs in this comment? There should be 5 or 6 separate paras … but they don’t show up in the Preview.
[Weird - I’ve disabled rich text as Rudolf suggests, I took out all the table tags, but still no paragraphs displaying, then I stripped out all html (there were still some para tags in there), then I did something else but I can’t remember what because I’ve had a phone call in between … and now it’s as I wanted it]
